Ahh, spring training in Arizona. Today we checked out the AZ Diamondbacks spring training field which is next to the 101 loop in Scottsdale. They share this facility (Salt River Field) with the Colorado Rockies. I've been to the newer fields over in the west valley and they are real nice but let me tell you; Salt River Field is top notch. This has to be the ultimate spring training facility ever. The practice fields are immaculate and numerous with shaded areas for fans and the main stadium has three decks plus lawn seating and plenty of concession stands and bathrooms. You walk in the main gate right past a humongous batting practice building on one side and a practice field on the other side. They even have a little practice field where future diamondbacks can practice their batting and run the bases. What more could you want? Okay parking, yep there is plenty of parking next to the field. The entire place is very impressive---better than anything on the west side. http://www.saltriverfields.com/
I have to admit I’m real partial to the old Phoenix Municipal stadium where the Oakland A’s play because that place has lots of character and history. Remember when the Firebirds played there pre-Diamondback days? However let’s face it. You had to make a choice between getting something at the concession stand, or going to the bathroom, or watching the game because that’s all you had time for when the place was full up with fans. I hear the A’s might be moving to Mesa in a couple years anyway and that ASU Sun Devils will start playing here. Spring training has come a long way and the Cactus league has too.
Spring training has a few more weeks to run so get out there and enjoy some sunshine and some great baseball.
