The Salt Lake Bees defeated the Las Vegas 51s in four games, 3-to-1, to win the Pacific Coast League (PCL) Pacific Conference title. It was a series that epitomized the phrase, “grinding it out,” with the difference between winner and loser in all four games being just one run. The first two Salt Lake wins ended in walk-offs. Game one on September 4 was decided by a walk-off homerun by Matt Long in the bottom of the ninth inning, with two outs. In the ninth inning of game two, the next evening, Scott Cousins hit a walk-off sacrifice fly to score Andy Marte.
With the series win, the Bees advanced to the PCL Championships to face the American Conference champions, Omaha Storm Chasers in a best-of-five series. In Omaha for game one on September 10, the two teams only got through the first inning before heavy rains and lightning moved in. After a delay of nearly two-and-one-half hours, the umpires suspended the game for the night.
Game one will resume from the bottom of the second inning at 12:05 p.m. MDT on September 11. Game two will begin later that evening, at the originally scheduled time of 6:05 p.m. MDT.
After two games in Omaha, the two teams will travel to finish the series in Salt Lake City. Game three is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. MDT on September 13 at Spring Mobile Ballpark. There will be a fireworks show following the game. Games four and five, if needed, are scheduled for 6:35 p.m. MDT on September 14 and 1:05 p.m. MDT on September 15.
The winner of this series will be crowned the PCL champions and will face the International League (IL) champions on September 17 in a one-game final for the Triple-A baseball crown. The 2013 Triple-A Championship game will be held at Coca-Cola Park, home of the Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs in Allentown, PA.
