A Red Flannel Cat Food recall has been issued in 23 states after a possible salmonella contamination.

Minnesota-based PMI Nutrition, LLC, announced the recall January 26. The affected cat food was reportedly produced for PMI Nutrition by a third-party manufacturer and marketed through pet food dealers in these states: Alabama, Georgia, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Dakota, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Vermont, Wisconsin and West Virginia.

The Red Flannel Cat Food recall, activated voluntarily by PMI Nutrition, is based on results of routine testing by the Detroit District Office of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). No actual cases of feline or other illness has yet been reported, so the recall is precautionary at this point.

The Red Flannel Cat Food recall pertains to 20-pound bags of dry feline food, labeled as follows:

  • Best by: 05 06 14
  • Lot: 096 13 SM L2 1A
  • UPC: 7 42869 00058 5

What are the possible symptoms of salmonella infection?

Salmonella can cause abdominal cramping, decreased appetite, diarrhea, eye irritation, fever muscle pain, nausea, and vomiting in affected animals or individuals. In serious cases, salmonella infection may lead to arterial infections, arthritis, dehydration, endocarditis, muscle pain, and urinary tract symptoms.

Salmonella-infected cats, humans, or others may spread contamination without displaying symptoms.

What should consumers do, if they purchased the recalled cat food?

Cat food customers are advised to stop using the product immediately and return any unused portions to their local pet food dealers for full refunds or replacements.

Pet owners will want to consult veterinarians, if their animals have consumed the recalled product, particularly if symptoms of salmonella infection are present.

Certainly, humans should wash hands carefully after handling cat food potentially contaminated with salmonella. Pet food dishes, and all affected kitchen utensils or household surfaces must be completely disinfected as well to avoid cross-contamination.
