Starting July 1st, prepare to pay a little more sales tax when you shop in four North Carolina counties. Hertford, Lee, Randolph and Rowan Counties will all have an additional .25% local sales tax starting on July 1st, 2010.
This will bring the total sales tax to 8% for these counties; 2.25% for local and 5.75% for state. The other eight counties with an 8% sales tax rate are Alexander, Catawba, Cumberland, Haywood, Martin, Pitt, Sampson and Surry Counties. Mecklenburg County still has the highest sales tax rate in North Carolina with 8.25%, while eighty-seven counties have 7.75% sales tax rate.
Since the 2007 North Carolina General Assembly passed legislation, counties have been able to levy an additional .25% local sales tax if the residents of the county vote for it. The local rate of tax portion of the sales tax goes back to counties and this additional sales tax will help the counties shrinking budget and funds.
The additional sales tax increase will be applied to purchase of tangible personal property, certain digital property and any other transaction subject to the North Carolina sales tax law. There are a couple of exceptions to the increase.
Any sales of food subjected to the 2% sales tax rate are not subjected to the .25% increase in Hertford, Lee, Randolph and Rowan Counties. Also, if construction materials are purchased to fulfill a lump-sum or unit-price contract entered into, awarded or bid made before July 1, 2010 will not be subjected to the sales tax increase. Otherwise, expect to pay 8% sales tax for items you purchase starting on July 1st.
