Sales tax holiday for school prep this weekend

See also

The first weekend of August brings sales tax relief for many shoppers in North Carolina. Beginning 12:01 am on Friday, August 5, 2011, through 11:59 pm Sunday, August 7, 2011, North Carolina shoppers will not have to pay sales tax for many items in preparation for the school season. Products purchased do not have to be used for school purchases so it represents a great weekend to buy a computer for the house or stock up on diapers.

Listed below are the categories of items and their per item maximum prices:

  1. Clothing including everything from general apparel to diapers, costumes and wedding apparel ($100)
  2. Sports and recreation equipment ($50)
  3. Computers including tablets and netbooks ($3,500)
  4. Computer supplies including printers and printing supplies ($250)
  5. School supplies ($100)
  6. School instructional material including workbooks ($300)

A list of items exempt are listed on pdf at North Carolina Department of Revenue.

What businesses are required to participate or whether fabrics are exempt can be found in FAQ's listed with the website.

Several Durham-based independent and franchise businesses have merchandise to fit these parameters. According to studies noted by Independent Durham, for every $100 spent at an independent local business, $45 stays in the community - three times more than with money spent at a national chain.
