Metroid has long been one of Nintendo’s staple franchises, so it’s good to see Samus getting some love with this awesome looking stage. The stage itself seems to be based on the Bottle Ship, the enormous space station where Other M takes place. While it seems pretty straight forward, Super Smash Bros. veterans know that Metroid stages are anything but.
Masahiro Sakurai, creative director of the Super Smash Bros. franchise, left a cryptic message on the Miiverse: “Out of the blue, here’s a new stage–the Pyrosphere from Metroid: Other M! An enemy from Samus’s past may appear at any second…”
Samus has quite the colorful cast of enemies, ranging from the iconic Metroid creature itself, to her arch-nemesis Ridley. Super Smash Bros. Melee featured a stage where the monster Kraid would appear out of an ocean of acid and rotate the entire level with its massive strength, forcing combatants in the heat of a fight to scramble up the spinning level to reach the top.
Who knows what challenges this new stage will bring, and what other elements from the Metroid games will play a role in this newest addition to the Super Smash Bros. franchise? We’ll all just have to wait and see.
