Saiyuki (left to right): Hakkai, Sanzo, Gojyo, and Goku

This review and recommendation is about Saiyuki. It is by Kazuya Minekura. It is released by TokyoPop and has nine volumes. It has a prequel and sequel series. There is also an anime based off this manga series.

It is based on the Chines legend: Journey to the West and is about a Genjyo Sanzo, Son Goku, Sha Gojyo, and Cha Hakkai. Sanzo is a priest. Son Goku is demon, but more powerful. He‘s actually something in between a god and a regular demon. Cha Hakkai is a human turned demon. Sha Gojyo is a child of Taboo (half-demon, half-human). They are chosen to see what’s going on with the minus wave. It is causing every demon who doesn’t use their inhibitors into a killing machine. The gods believe that someone is committing a taboo mixing human science and Yokai (demon) magic. So, they are on a journey to India to find out what is happening and stopping in order to restore peace and harmony to Shangri-La. Do they find out what’s going on and who’s doing it? You’ll have to read to find out.

This series is more of a crossover series, which means both girls and guys will like it. Girls will like the fantasy and cute boys. The guys will like the action. It is rated OT for Older teen. 16 and up. This examiner recommends this for everyone. If you are a fan of the series Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, you’ll enjoy this even more. It’s based on the same legend. They joke about Goku a lot and make jokes by referencing Dragon Ball.

If you live in Colorado Springs area, you can find this series at your local PPLD branch or your local bookstore. Happy Reading!
