Microsoft updated the Game with Gold program Friday with one of the more sarcastic and over the top games available for the Xbox 360. “Saints Row: The Third” is now free to download for Xbox LIVE Gold subscribers through the end of May.

“Saints Row: The Third” is an open-world action adventure game set in the city of Steelport. The game picks up two years later from “Saints Row 2” and the 3rd Street Saints have gone from street gang to a media empire.

The growth of the gang and the power that comes along with it isn’t all good though. They’ve attracted the attention of organizations like the Syndicate who kidnap the Boss, Shaundi and Johnny Gat in an attempt to force a hostile takeover. Things escalate from there and keep on escalating in ways both bizarre and humorous.

An Xbox LIVE Gold subscription is required to download the games for free but, once purchased, the games are yours to keep even after your subscription ends. Subscriptions are currently available for $50 from Amazon and $59.99 from Best Buy, Microsoft Store and Walmart. For those willing to wait, the Gold subscription regularly drops down to $40 to $50.

Changes are coming to the Xbox LIVE Gold program in June. The Xbox One will begin to receive free games starting with “Max: The Curse of the Brotherhood” and “Halo: Spartan Assault.” Additionally, the number of free games the Xbox 360 released each month will be expanded to three beginning with “Dark Souls,” “Charlie Murder” and “Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition.”

However, it’s not clear if the same download once and own free forever policy will remain in place. A FAQ posted on suggests that Microsoft will make Games with Gold more like PS Plus where a subscription is required to continue to access the downloaded games.
