When Koch Media acquired the highly sought out THQ property, Saints Row, back in January, they stated their intentions for the series will be known in the coming months. Today, the future of the Saint Row series is revealed with the announcement of "Saints Row IV". Published by Deep Silver and developed by Volition, "Saints Row IV" will pick up where the third game left, with the Saints’ boss running sitting comfy at the White House. With the Saints ruling high, it only makes sense for the fourth game to upscale the criminal threat to unearthly magnitude with a full-scale alien invasion. Captured by these aliens, the Saints are transported to a “bizarro-Steelport simulation”, where they acquire superpowers and try to escape from their captor’s mental grasp in order to save the human race.
If all this sounds familiar, it’s because this was the original concept for the “Enter the Dominatrix” expansion pack for "Saints Row: The Third". It also explains why so many of Saints Row IV elements like graphics and customization remain the same from the previous game. While it looks like “Enter the Dominatrix” is being shoved out the door as a new Saints Row game in order to compete with Grand Theft Auto V, a spokesperson from Deep Silver told Joystiq "Saints Row IV" is not a DLC with a new coat of paint:
"That expansion was cancelled and elements of it were rolled into SRIV. There will be a director's cut of Enter the Dominatrix released as DLC when SRIV comes out."
Fans hoping for a return of the silly, but grounded world of the first and second Saints Row game may be disappointed with "Saints Row IV" escalating the crazy atmosphere further, but the trailer showcasing the Infamous-like gameplay looks promising nonetheless. "Saints Row IV" will arrive on August 20th, 2013 in America and everywhere else on the 23rd.
