Saints clinch South and Brees breaks NFL record

The New Orleans Saints set out for a win Monday night against the Atlanta Falcons and got it--45-15 win and quaterback Drew Brees broke the NFL passing record that has been standing for the last three decades.

What does the win mean to the Saints and their fans?  They clinch the NFC South title and stay in the running for the No. 2 seed in the playoffs.  The Saints are now 12-3 for the season and have won the last seven games.  They are also undefeated at home in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome this season.  Not bad stats going into the playoffs at all.

Add in a little mojo from Drew Brees and breaking Dan Marino's 5,084 passing yards and you have something else to deal with--a  dynamic quarterback.  Brees broke the standing NFL record Monday, December 26, 2011 in the game against their biggest rival, the Atlanta Falcons.  Brees managed to break the record in the final minutes of the game with a pass to Darren Sproles for nine yards that put the quarterback over Marino's record with a total of 5,087 for the season.  Sproles scored on the run giving the Saints a 45-16 victory over the Falcons.

The Saints will next take on the Carolina Panthers on New Year's Day.  They will be able to clinch the No. 2 seed in the playoffs and a bye if San Fransico loses to St. Louis in their game to also be played on New Year's Day.
