Wesley Reid, 22 of Saint Louis was charged on Wednesday with torturing a pit bull nearly to death. The Humane Society had no choice but to euthanasia the animal based on severity of burns and pain and suffering. Charges include 1-felony count of animal abuse. The dog's name was Zeus, whose owner reported that his pet had gone missing in late August. Zeus was last seen near the intersection of Bircher Blvd and Amelia Ave in downtown Saint Louis. The dog was later discovered by a neighbor in their backyard. Reportedly, Zeus was severely burned. An investigation by the Humane Society of Missouri's Animal Cruelty Task Force led to Reid's arrest.
Zeus had 3rd-Degree burns covering nearly 75% of his head and face; front left paw (pads burned off), left side of his body, his left hip, left leg, and scrotum.
"Prior to the incident, the dog appeared to have been in excellent health with good dental and body condition. Zeus was given appropriate shelter, clean water, food and shelter following his rescue."
