Saint Hellions slam Sugar Skulls

The Tilted Thunder Rail Birds opened their 2013 campaign on Sunday evening at the Comcast Arena in Everett. The opening bout featured last season's 2nd place team, the Saint Hellions, taking on the Sugar Skulls.

Right from the beginning, the Saint Hellions dominated this bout in almost every way possible. Their offense was on fire, erupting for 44 points in the first six jams alone. Meanwhile their defense was equally effective, keeping the Sugar Skulls off the scoreboard for the first 10 jams of the first quarter. Jean Claude Van Damsel (2-0 in the 11th jam) and Karny Aslaughta (5-0 in the 12th jam) finished the first twelve minutes strong for the Sugar Skulls. However, the Hellions still held a commanding 52-7 lead after the first quarter.

It was more of the same in the 2nd quarter. Star jammers Catti LaBelle and Arti Chokehold along with Sweet Ca-Roll-Ine and newcomer Gringa Kpinga kept pouring on the points along with stopping the Skulls jammers at almost every turn along with fellow blockers Krista Lies and Mae Lay as the Hellions extended their lead even further, holding onto a 107-24 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.

The Sugar Skulls played much better in the 2nd half of this bout, though. In the third quarter, they were barely outscored by the Hellions 29-27 through the first eleven jams. However, a final power jam run in the 12th and final jam of the 3rd saw Hellions jammer Catti LaBelle pile on another 15 points for the ladies in orange. After three quarters of play, the Hellions held a commanding 152-51 lead.

The 4th quarter was pretty much dominated by the Sugar Skulls. With players on both teams fouling out left and right (each squad had 3 players foul-out of the game), the Skulls made the most out of a few power jam opportunities and scored consistently throughout the final stanza. They did win the quarter 46-37, but still wound up falling to the Saint Hellions by the final score of 189-97.

Three Stars

3. HammonDa Bone. I had her leading the Sugar Skulls in blocked jammers (7) and also opening a hole for her jammer to coast through. She also picked up 17 points in 6 jams with the star on her helmet. She also didn't foul-out.

2. Krista Lies. She tied for the overall game lead in combined blocking stats, picking up 6 blocked jammers while clearing the way for her jammer to get through on 4 occasions. She also picked up 10 points in 4 runs at jammer. She also didn't foul-out.

1. Sweet Ca-Roll-Ine. The Saint Hellions jammer was the most effective out of the players that managed to stay on the track the entire time. She picked up 45 points in only 6 runs while donning the jammers panty. She was also very effective within the pack, picking up 6 blocked jammers and opening one hole to aid her teammate. She also didn't foul out. Which was a big thing in this one.

Key Jam of the Game

I'll go ahead and say it was Arti Chokehold's 10-0 decision in the 2nd jam of the first quarter. The game was a blow out, and the route was pretty much on after that one.
