Sailors for the Sea, trying to protect the worlds oceans

See also

Sailors for the Sea, a charitable organization designed to protect the worlds oceans and marine habitat's all over the globe.

Sailors for the Sea runs three primary programs in order to further the environmental health of the worlds oceans, Clean Regatta's, Rainy Day Kit's, and Certified Sea Friendly.

The following descriptions are from the Sailors for the Sea website.

Clean Regattas is a certification program that helps regattas, sailing programs and other events voluntarily achieve higher environmental standards. Participants work to fulfill comprehensive Best Practices and receive the economic, public relations and social benefits of running environmentally friendly events. Sailors for the Sea provides support and materials, and the final certification that a club or event is a Clean Regatta.

The Sailors for the Sea Rainy Day Kits are environmental lesson plans focused on marine ecology that can be taught to students on the dock or in the classroom.

Rainy Day Kits have been contributed by top marine science institutions and are created so they can easily be taught by teachers, camp or sailing instructors who may not have a background in environmental science or the budget to purchase extensive materials.

We have developed lessons that are flexible and fun while still being substantial, as we believe that children with an understanding of the underwater ecosystems are more likely to develop a strong passion for protecting the earth’s waters.

The Certified Sea Friendly program will identify and establish recreational sailing and powerboat technical performance standards that reduce environmental impact, increase safety, and are economically feasible through the development (design and construction), operation and ultimate decommissioning of the vessels.

Certified Sea Friendly (CSF) will create the first ever LEED (Leadership in Environmental Engineering and Design) inspired third party sustainability certification for the recreational marine vessel-manufacturing sector. CSF will identify and establish standards for vessels, in terms of design, construction, and operation, that will be as respectful of the environment as is technologically possible and economically feasible throughout their lifecycle.

The latest initiative Sailors for the Sea has gotten involved with, is a fund drive to shore up resources and members from the sailing community to protect the world ocean environment over the next ten years.

According to a quote from the website, "Oceanographer Sylvia Earle says that our actions over the next 10 years will determine the state of the ocean for the next 10,000 years."

"Sailors for the Sea's message is clear and powerful. With your support we have the courage, initiative, vision, mission, and passion to embrace all who share this dream. Your contribution declares your role in protecting the ocean, and as our partner, on the journey to 2023."

Please consider supporting Sailors for the Sea in the upcoming year so that the sailing community can speak loud and clear that we are willing to fight for and protect the worlds oceans.
