Water is not just for drinking. Many pets enjoy taking dips in ponds, streams, lakes, and even swimming pools! It’s a great way to burn off energy and escape from the summer heat while having fun. However there are some safety precautions you need to take when including the family pet in water activities.

Swimming pools offer many unique challenges to our pets. The sides of a pool are very difficult for a dog or cat to get out of because they do not have the upper body strength that people do. Always supervise your pet while they are swimming so that if they have trouble you can help them get out of the pool quickly. Chlorine and other chemicals added to keep pool water clean can be very irritating to their sensitive skin. A quick thorough rinse with the garden hose can help remove these chemicals after a dip in the pool.

In ponds, streams, and lakes muddy, slippery, or steep banks can make it difficult for pets (horses included) to get in and out easily. Keep a close eye on your pet when you are around water. Strong currents in rivers and lakes can also be very dangerous. A doggie lifejacket is a great idea if your dog will be out on a boat, river, or even in your backyard swimming pool. This helps keep your dog afloat if they get tired or have difficult swimming.

If you don’t have a large pool, lake, or stream near your home you can still include your dog in water activities. Many dogs enjoy having an inexpensive small plastic toddler pools to cool off in, even if they just get their paws wet. Just don’t be surprised if you find your dog laying down or even rolling around in a small toddler pool.

Remember to be safe and keep your pet safe while enjoying the water this summer.
