Many students of Arizona colleges are preparing for spring break vacations. Whether they journey by air, land or sea they search for adventure, relaxation and fun. The recent Costa Concordia disaster has many travelers concerned about the safety of cruise ships. But keep in mind that travel always presents an element of risk. The key to a fun-filled journey is to plan ahead and be aware of the risks. Here are some helpful tips when embarking on a maritime voyage.
Be cautious when selecting travel destinations. In 2011, reports indicated that the cruise ship industry has become more wary of certain ports in Mexico . Early in 2011 port calls had been suspended in Mazatlan due to the shooting of two tourists near a popular hotel. Other similar incidents have been reported in areas away from Mexican port cities which have lead to heightened security throughout the country. The turf wars and drug trafficking crackdown continues in Mexico and travelers are cautioned. Cancun, Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan should be on cruise line itineraries in early 2012. Check with the cruise lines before booking your journey.
As oceanic travelers continue to venture upon the uncertain seas to international destinations, they should be prepared for the unexpected. Along with the structural integrity of the massive cruise ships and the skills of the crew, passengers should also be aware of the following risks.
- Learn emergency procedure once onboard. Cruise ship protocol outlines an emergency drill is to be conducted once all passengers are onboard. Some are conducted prior to the ship leaving the dock other cruise lines present the emergency drill within 24 hours of departure. Take a moment and locate the life boats, life preservers and emergency stations.
- Consult cruise director for emergency information and any warnings on locations to avoid during port excursions.
- Always use common sense. Some cruise ships carry thousands of passengers, like floating cities. Watch out for those who prey on relaxing travelers. Don’t wander alone down dark hallways or decks or invite strangers into your cabin.
- Travel in groups and avoid drawing attention. While onboard ship or exploring a port city try and have at least one traveling companion. Avoid getting in a taxi alone or if there is another passenger offering to split the fare.
- Keep valuables at home – although cabins have safes, cabin stewards have access to the rooms and bypass codes can be accessed. Make a copy of your travel documents and tuck some funds in a secondary location, not in the safe.
- Take care of your medical needs. Keep your medication with you, on your person when possible. Know your physical limits and if you get sick don’t hesitate to call your physician at home. The ship’s medical doctor and your personal physician can work together to provide you with the care you need.
- A common crime on cruise ships is sexual assault. Be careful when consuming alcohol. Women should be aware of who may have access to their drinks and should not leave them unattended. Also when drinking, be cautious because trips and falls occur.
- Passengers who have fallen overboard are seldom recovered. Avoid leaning over railings or taking the famous pose used in the movie “Titanic” – use common sense when considering climbing along ship balconies.
- When a crime occurs onboard it is subject to the laws based on where the ship is located. If the ship is in port then the crime is handled based on the laws of the country. At sea, the issue is handled by the legal system of the country that governs the waters. In international waters the crime committed onboard would be handled by maritime law.
- If you are the victim of a crime you have the right to file your own report. You should find out if the offense will be reported to authorities. Cruise lines are required to report any serious crimes that involve US citizens to the FBI. The severity of the crime is determined by the security officers. Be proactive and make sure the proper agency is notified.
Travel by any method is always a bit of a risk but being prepared will minimize the hazards and ensure a pleasant journey for all who seek adventure and relaxation. More than 11 million travelers embark on ocean cruises every year. The cruise industry maintains the utmost priority in the safety and security of the passengers and crew members. Cruise ship travel continues to be one of the safest spring break adventures available.
