Safety Tips for Black Friday Shopping

Many online sellers will be out shopping on Black Friday for inventory to sell during the holidays. Here are a few tips for keeping your wallet, purse, and yourself safe during this crazy shopping day.

1.       Do not carry your social security card or number with you. This information can easily be used by someone else to open a charge account.

2.       Remove any credit cards that you won’t be using that day. This serves two purposes: if your wallet or purse is stolen, your loss will be minimized. Also, you won’t be tempted to spend more than you planned.

3.       Make copies of the front and back of each credit card you plan to carry with you and leave the copy at home. In the event your purse or wallet is stolen, you will have the information recorded and ready to file a police report. Don’t keep this information in your cell phone. If your phone is stolen, the thief will have all of your credit card information at their fingertips.

4.       Use your card with discretion when other shoppers are around. Camera phones are everywhere. The person standing next to you in line could easily take a photo of your card and get the number, you name, and card expiration date for future use.

5.       Keep your receipts in your wallet or your purse, not in the merchandise bag. This helps you stay more organized and will make it harder for a thief to return stolen merchandise. If your merchandise bag is stolen, quickly go back to the store to report the theft immediately.  The thief might have a harder time returning the merchandise without a receipt perhaps a quick thinking salesperson may be able to identify them.

6.       Don’t carry your cell phone in your hand – keep it in a pocket or purse. Cell phones can easily be snatched out of your hand in a crowd buy a stealth thief. Used cell phones are great sellers on eBay. Your stolen phone could pay for someone else’s Christmas!

Happy Black Friday shopping, find lots of great deals!
