Safety patrols from LAPD and sheriff’s deputies begins

Starting today, the first day that students return to school in Los Angeles since the school shootings in Connecticut, officials from more than a dozen law enforcement agencies will provide safety visits to each and every LAUSD campus and all charter and private schools that have requested these visits.

The LAUSD already has full time officers stationed at each of the district’s high schools. For K-8 campuses, a police officer, administrator, detective or sheriff’s deputy will visit each school. They will walk through the school, speaking with students, teachers and administrators and examine the school’s safety plan. The LAPD doesn’t have the manpower to maintain the new plan indefinitely and is seeking to establish a system whereby the same officers check in with a school on a daily basis so they are familiar with the students and staff. These visits will become part of the routine of the officer who patrols the neighborhood.

According to Chief Charlie Beck, "A barrier has been broken in our culture, it's our job... all of our jobs, to make sure that we resurrect that barrier and make our children safe."
