First off I would just like to say that this is a product I definitely would not want to review. So I will write an article about it instead. The Safecast Geiger Counter is a little gadget that hooks to your hip or rests in your pocket that will alert you if you are in a high-level radiation zone.
These small little Geiger counters are affordable at 400$ a unit but are yet to be sold as of now. Safecast launched the device after the Fukushima nuclear disaster that hit Japan in 2011. By completing a successful coast to coast Geiger counter fundraiser, Safecast announced a kickstarter program for the device in 2012.
The main goal and perhaps the most interesting part of the project is that the company will eventually be able to collect all the data from each individual Safecast Geiger Counter and upload all of the information onto a centralized network. The result will be that human beings will be able to locate areas of dense concentration on a world-wide scale.
Obviously, nuclear energy is going to be a main power source in the future. However, more use of that power may result in disastrous events. In any case, if a radio-active calamity were to occur, Safecast Geiger Counter would be a necessary device and it's great that companies have started to think about this technology. Let's just hope people do not have to use them too soon.
