The idea of co-sleeping is often thought of as a risky practice to many parents who are uneducated about how to properly co-sleep. Co-sleeping is actually a very safe method that has been practiced throughout the world for thousands of years. To reduce any risks, follow these guidelines:
- Never sleep with baby after drinking alcohol, using drugs, or under the influence of prescription drugs
- Keep pillows, blankets and comforters away from baby. Dress baby and mother in enough clothing so that only a light sheet is needed for a cover.
- Make sure that sheets are fitted under the mattress
- Remove the boxspring and place the mattress directly on the floor to reduce the risk of baby falling.
- Baby should only sleep next to the mother because mothers have an awareness about the location of their baby.
- Always sleep on a firm mattress and avoid waterbeds or overly stuffed sofas.
- Never leave the baby unattended on the bed.
