Sadowski story brings back memories of year in San Jose

Longtime San Jose Giants fans should be happy to see Ryan Sadowski having success at the major league level.

As Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News writes, Sadowski required emergency brain surgery in 2003 shortly after finishing his first season with the Giants'  short-season club in Keizer, Ore.  He was diagnosed  with a subdural hematoma and doctors drilled two holes in his head to suck out blood that had pooled in his brain.  Sadowski spent the next two days in intensive care.

Sadowski spent the 2005 season in San Jose, registering a 9-6 record with a 4.64 ERA.  As you can see in the photo at right wore a catcher's helmet on the mound as extra protection.  Now, he wears a plastic insert that he designed and took to a plastics manufacturer.

Sadowski, 26, is slated to make his second major league start Friday night when the San Francisco Giants host the Houston Astros at AT&T Park.
