Saddle River Day School defeats Demarest in high school girls basketball

Saddle River Day School defeated Demarest, 63-43, in the first round of the Bergen County Tournament.

As the higher seed, SRD hosted the game in their home gym. They allowed people to attend for free and only collected donations for their Threes for Sandy Hook charity.

In the first quarter, Demarest and Saddle River Day matched each other basket for basket, ending in a tie score, 9-9. SRDS' Izzy McMahon is lightning fast, has great handles, and can score from anywhere. On a fast break lay-up she had a great pass fake in the air before laying it up softly. She finished with rebounds, 3 steals, 1 assist, and 31 points.

Demarest had the lead at the half, 19-18. The Lewis sisters start the game strong and work hard together. Meghan Lewis ahd 5 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 5 points. Kaitlin Lewis had 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals, and also had 5 points.

SRD came out strong in the second half. They went on a run and led 26-19 with 6:10 remaining in the third quarter. SRD's Kayla Oge worked hard underneath. She finished with 11 rebounds, 2 steals, 1 blocked shot, and 6 points.

SRDS led at the end of the third quarter, 40-32.

Demarest's Ashley Kiel wasn't afraid to get inside and work for rebounds. She is an aggressive player who earned 8 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 5 points, before getting hurt in the second half.

With less than 4 minutes remaining in the game, Demarest began to foul to stop the clock. When Izzy McMahon went on a fast break an intentional foul was called when the back of McMahon's jersey was pulled in an effort to stop her. With 1:54 remaining, SRDS had a 58-39 lead.

SRD will play Teaneck in the next round.
