Saddle River Day School defeats Cresskill High School, 56-35, in high school girls' basketball on January 3, 2013.

It is not every day that a high school team is able to start five freshmen, but at Saddle River Day School, the freshmen are just that good.

At the end of the first quarter, SRDS led 9-4. SRD plays a tough, quick, man-to-man full court defense. Danielle McMahon is incredible all over the court. At half-time, SRDS led by 10 points, 25-15.

For Cresskill, starting senior captain Ava Skinner, is playing a much different role on her team this year. Ava explains, "Last year, I was just one component of an older, more experienced team. This year, I am the senior captain and with that comes much more responsibility in terms of becoming a leader and creating a new dynamic within a much younger team. A lot of pressure is on me to remain focused and positive at all times and to set an example because our team is very young compared to the last few years."

In the game, it was obvious that Skinner has stepped up to the challenge. Despite being in foul trouble, Skinner did not lose composure and did not stop playing defense. She continually met girls to defend fast break layups and denied the three-point shot. She also had an incredible passing game, patiently working the ball around the perimeter and into the post to open teammates. She was encouraging She did a great job weaving through the defense to attack the basket. Skinner finished with 2 steals and 18 points (note: other sources had her at 16 points).

For SRDS, Jaide Hinds-Clarke saw more of the court after sitting for most of the first half due to foul trouble. Hinds-Clarke has incredible velocity and can get to the level of the backboard to rebound and score. She finished with 11 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 2 blocked shots, and 14 points.

Cresskill's Kiersten Swan also played a great game. She helped to break the press, draw fouls, and worked hard inside to get rebounds. She finished with 5 rebounds, 3 steals, 3 assists, and 9 points (note: other sources had her at 11 points).
