Annika Sorenstam, the retired LPGA star who once teed it up in a PGA Tour event and who also once shot a 59 during her LPGA career, is again going to play with the boys. From the same tees. Only this time she’s the favorite, in overwhelming fashion. Harrah’s/Harveys sportsbook has Annika at even odds. Retired quarterback Billy Joe Tolliver, the 2013 winner, is listed at 9/2 odds. Rick Rhoden, who’s won the event multiple times is at 5/1 odds.
“Right now this is the biggest thing I’m going to play,” she said after being asked about a possible LPGA comeback. “The last few years I’ve been on the beach with friends on a boat (watching the tournament).” Where else can you do that?
She’ll tee off on the first hole at 11:20 along with John Elway and John Smoltz. One of the more fun or funnier groups on Friday will be Charles Barkeley, Larry the Cable Guy and comic actor Kevin Nealon. The comedy should be good because the golf won’t be.
NFL Hall of Famer and Golf Channel Big Break NFL Puerto Rico winner, Jerry Rice, will have his teamate from the event, Isaac "Sasquatch" Sanchez caddieing for him. They were a winning pair on the Golf Channel reality show and will be a striking pair on the golf course as the tatooed, pierced, Fu Manchu wearing Sanchez advises Rice on club selection. Look for them to get some TV time over the weekend.

Schaeffer’s Mill, also in Truckee is morphing into the top of the Truckee hill. Though Johnny Miller was the designer, he was joined at Schaeffer’s Mill by the late John Harbottle who was a premier architect. The result is a course that is actually helping to sell condos in the still challenged real estate market. Play Schaefer’s Mill while you can, as it will be a fully private course soon, as it was planned to be from the beginning.
Tickets to the American Century Championship at Edgewood Lake Tahoe golf course are available at the gate.
