Sacramento Comic Examiner's Kickstarter proect

I am writing this Examiner article to talk about a project of mine that I've been working on for the past year.  Though you readers may know me as Sacramento's Comic Book Examiner, I also write movie reviews part time at The Movie Wizard.com.  I also write an Oscar blog at The Always Unpredictable Oscars that I recently started updating again.  Ironically, even though this is the site that pays me on a monthly basis, it these sites I update more.  Priorities, I know, but what are you gonna do right?  Well, since I have more content on those sites, I decided to collect many of the reviews I had already written, write some new ones, and collect them into a book.

That book is going to be called "The Complete Unofficial 83rd Annual Academy Awards Review Guide" the first in what I hope will be a series that will eventually cover all the years.  In this book you'll find a review for every movie that got an Oscar nomination of any sort.  Which means "Inception" is in here for its eight nominations as well as "The Temptest" for its sole nomination for Best Costume Design.  The goal needed to publish the book is $5,000 of which I have...$1,136 (as of this writing). Not quite where I expected it to be after a month, but there's still 10 days left. So I figured this would be a good time to mention it here.

Why mention it here?  Well, first of all, it's my book and I'm the Sacramento Comic Book Examiner.  That makes this locally relevant I suppose.  Also, for comic book and animation fans, there are reviews for "Iron Man 2," "Toy Story 3," and "The Illusionist" in this book.  All reviews have had extra commentary added to the reviews and has been proof read by a book editor.  Though some interest from major book publishers has been shown, the ecconemy being rough as it is...well, that's why I decided to try and sell it through Kickstarter first.  Some pointers for people who have questions:

  • For me this is a pre-order system, NOT a fundraiser! I'm not asking for money for nothing. You get something with your pledge (as Kickstarter calls it). I don't like asking for handouts, so for those who felt this might have been about begging for money, I can assure you its not.
  • While there are several different things you get with the various different levels of pledges, you only need to pledge $10 to get the e-book copy and $20 for a paperback AND e-book! I'm not doing a huge markup just to gain extra money off you. This is what the book is going to go for in each respective format. Since many of you are iPad, Kindle, and Nook users, this is a good way to get a book for a cheap amount of money.
  • No, not ALL the reviews in the book you can find on my websites! Some of the content is exclusive to the book, and if it doesn't get published, it doesn't see the light of day.
  • Yes, all the reviews are written and the book is put together. E-books you'll get days after the funding is raised and hard copies you'll receive before Christmas.
  • MOST IMORTANT: You will NOT pay anything until November 4th! If the goal is not reached, you pay nothing PERIOD! I stress this because many people have told me "I don't have $20 right now" or something to that effect. I'm not sure if anyone realizes that they are not paying for anything right now, they are just saying they will in 10 days. So if you want a book but don't have the money now, pledge anyway, because that $20 is going to be budgeted a couple weeks down the road.

That's pretty much all I can say now. Hopefully I can get enough pre-orders to fill the order and get this thing made. It would make a great Christmas gift for a movie fan in your family (you know there's at least one). So the link is below, don't worry about how much you pledge. If all you can afford is a $10 e-book that is fine by me. I appriciate every sale regardless what format it is. If you are one of the local Book Examiners and want to do a story on this, feel free to e-mail me and I can answer questions, provide interviews, and even provide preview copies if the book gets funded.  As for my regular readers...if this isn't your cup of tea, don't worry, normal comics related articles will continue this week!
