On May 31, dogs and pet lovers will converge on McKinley Park for an exciting day at Pups in the Park. The popular, family-friendly event will include a 1K dog walk, costume contests, pet adoptions, raffle, games and more.

Dog attendees will have the opportunity to roll around in the grass, enjoy the sunshine and practice the most traditional art of pooch communication, the canine posterior sniff.

Food trucks from SacMoFo will be there to tickle human taste buds, and there will be plenty of treats, toys and other goodies to keep a grin on the face of every dog.

Local Girl Scouts will be running carnival-style games and vendors will be on hand with unique items for pets and people.

Agility demonstrations and other canine-centric activities will be taking place throughout the day.

Proud pooches and their people can take part in the 1K "Pup Promenade" dog walk and in a fun costume contest as well. Local celebrities including KVIE’s Rob on the Road will judge entrants to choose the dog and owner that look the most alike, the best team of pups and people and the best overall canine costume.

Entrance into the dog walk and/or the costume contest is only $20 per dog.

Now in its 6th year, event organizer Joyce Thompson-Pierce believes the party just keeps getting better. “This year’s Pups in the Park will raise funds for the Front Street Animal Shelter’s updated pet surgery center,” she says, “and local people and businesses have donated amazing things for the raffle.”

Thompson-Pierce notes that the shelter’s expanded surgical clinic is not open to the public. The clinic will handle injuries and health problems of animals in the shelter’s care, like the thousands of cats and dogs that came to the shelter in 2013.

Thompson-Pierce, a long time animal rescue volunteer, explains that the surgery clinic’s foremost purpose is to provide much-needed spay and neuter services for adoptable shelter pets.

According to Front Street manager Gina Knepp, 2,800 animals were neutered last year in the tiny trailer used for surgeries at the shelter. Knepp says they are “hoping to double that” with the new surgery space.

Pups in the Park is sponsored by Cha Cha's Doggy Day Care, Grateful Dog Day Care, Incredible Pets, Petco, Scrub Boy's Car Wash and Rick & Susan Manuel.
