Libraries are a great resource for parents of special needs children. In addition to books, libraries offer many opportunities for socialization and support.
Sachem Public Library and Middle Country Library are two local libraries with extensive resources. At the Sachem Library, parenting books are located in the Children's section. A separate special needs section was created by Sachem SEPTA and can also be found in the Children's section.
The Centereach location of the Middle County Library houses the Suffolk Family Education Clearinghouse. The Clearinghouse provides an extensive variety of resources to support families. Any person who holds a suffolk county library card may access the Clearinghouse.
Each library offers children and teen programs. Calendars can be found on their respective websites. The programs provide the opportunity to socialize, often for the parents as well as the children. Special events are frequently held for families as well.
Programs for adults are offered too. You may find educational topics, book clubs, arts and crafts, even outings.
Celebrate Library Lovers Month by experiencing all that your local library has to offer. Read a book with your child. Borrow movies and music to enjoy together. Attend a family event. Libraries are a great place to spend quality time together.
