Edgy comedian Sacha Baron Cohen has split fans when it comes to his funny but when it comes to James Cameron, officials at the Academy feel his 2010 Oscar sketch was too offensive for live TV.
The actor who shelled out laughs in Borat and Bruno, had plans to put humor into his designated space during the 2010 Academy Awards, airing Sunday night.
New York Magazine alerted its readers today of insider information, saying Cohen was to appear on stage as a blue-skinned Avatar character. Alongside Cohen, was to be Ben Stiller translating the dialogue which would reveal Cohen's characters as pregnant with James Cameron's love child. NYmag.com goes on to say Cohen would "confront her baby daddy as if she were on Jerry Springer."
Because Cameron hails an unfriendly reputation in Hollywood when it comes to humor, the Academy's producers decided the skit would be cut for fear Cameron would walk out on live TV.
Sacha Baron Cohen’s spokesman, Matt Labov, told Vulture: “I hate to use the term, because it's so ubiquitous, but there were ‘creative differences.’ Nothing acrimonious, but both sides felt that since they couldn’t agree, [Cohen] might as well remain in London.”
