With Coach Ted Nolan and forward Zemgus Girgensons returning a few days earlier after Latvia was eliminated by Canada on Feb. 19, Defenseman Henrik Tallinder and goalies Ryan Miller and Jhonas Enroth returned to Buffalo on Monday, Feb. 24, after participating in the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi.
Ted Nolan and Zemgus Girgensons finished eighth in the tournament with Team Latvia after losing to Canada 2-1 in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. Girgensons finished the tournament with a goal and an assist for two points in five games.
Team USA finished a disappointing fourth place after losing to Team Finland 5-0 in the Bronze Medal game on Saturday. Ryan Miller only played one game in the tournament, stopping 17 of 18 shots in a 5-1 victory over Slovenia in the third game of the Preliminary round, with Los Angeles Kings goalie Jonathan Quick playing the other five games.
Jhonas Enroth and Henrik Tallinder ended up the most successful in terms of medals in the tournament, both earning the Silver Medal with Team Sweden. Enroth only served as the backup to New York Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist in five of Sweden’s six games and did not see any action, and Henrik Tallinder played in only two games and was held without a point. However, both were awarded with a Silver Medal on Sunday morning after Sweden lost to Team Canada 3-0 in the Gold Medal game.
With the five Sabres participants returning back to Buffalo after a little over two weeks in Russia, the team gets ready to host the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 7 p.m. The game was initially scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 7, but was postponed due to weather.
