Saab Museum to sell off collection?

The Saab Museum in Trollhattan, Sweden has announced plans to sell of its unique collection of historic cars. Saab fans worldwide are furiously attempting to stop this loss to both the Saab legacy and automotive history generally.

The collection numbers some 120 cars including legendary Saab rally winners, concept cars, rare production models, and prototypes. While new production Saabs are being sent to the crushers, this blow to Saab's history seems final confirmation of the brand's demise.

It is often said that "history is written by the winners." In Saab's case that's especially ironic because the winners in most cases are carmakers who followed Saab's lead in developing safe, aerodynamically designed cars equipped with front wheel drive. What once was thought of as quirky Saab thinking has become mainstream. A museum filled with cars illustrating this company's visionary thinking might easily be considered valuable to the automotive world in general, but with Saab being ripped apart to satisfy its creditors, a worst case scenario seems inevitable.
