The Society of Collaborative Arts, co-founded by Jimmy Guzman, M.S. and Yasmin McCarthy, in collaboration with Kimpton Hotels, is presenting two plays at the Ruby Room in the Onyx Hotel, written and directed by Debra Weiss, a screenwriter, and playwright, based in Boston.
Having conceptualized the idea of bringing arts and entertainment to the West End neighborhood of Boston, Guzman and McCarthy realized the opportunity of bringing a theatrical event to the bar scene there, and were delighted when Amy Murphy, General Manager of the Ruby Room, was willing to house one in their space.
Guzman and Weiss, who met on a flight en route to Los Angeles, reconnected in Boston shortly after their initial meeting to discuss plans to collaborate, and work together on a potential bar play to be produced in a bar Guzman managed with McCarthy.
Though their initial plans fell through, when the opportunity to present at the Ruby Room appeared, Guzman and McCarthy reached out to Weiss and asked if she would be interested in organizing a play there. Thrilled by the opportunity, Weiss set to work composing two pieces written especially for the space.
Both "The Bar Play" and "Finding Destiny in a Bar" are short, ten-minute pieces that touch upon the range of human emotions that lead us to wonder who we are as individuals, how we interact with others, and the manner in which our environment, and immediate surroundings, play a role in shaping our destinies as human beings.
The performance of both plays on March 6th at the Ruby Room in the Onyx Hotel (a Kimpton Hotel) will be an opportunity to familiarize yourself with both Weiss' work, and the work of Guzman, McCarthy, and the entire S.O.C.A. team, in establishing relationships between businesses, and artists.
