In other words: COULSON LIVES!
ABC president Paul Lee confirmed at the Television Critics Association pres tour to IGN that "S.H.I.E.L.D." will take place after "The Avengers," not before. What we all assumed was going to be a prequel will actually be a sequel. And that sequel will star Clark Gregg as Agent Coulson, so COULSON LIVES!
When we got the fantastic news that Clark Gregg would be starring in the Joss Whedon-helmed "S.H.I.E.L.D." to reprise his role as Agent Phil Coulson, most fans simply assumed that meant that the TV series would be a prequel to "The Avengers." After all, Coulson suffered a heroic and symbolic death in the little superhero flick, right? It was his death that brought the team together, right? So he couldn't possibly return from the grave to star in his own TV show, right?
Wrong, apparently. Here's what Lee had to say on how "S.H.I.E.L.D." and Coulson will fit into the Marvel cinematic universe:
"There is no question that it is part of the Marvel Universe. In fact, the story takes place after the battle for New York. [...]This is S.H.I.E.L.D. They're following their own particular stories. There are characters in it, Coulson, who clearly come from Avengers. So it's part of the world, but we're going to be very, very careful that we don't tread on the toes of the features and build a whole new world. And that's what Joss Whedon does better than anybody else. He's built a world for us."
So somehow, somewhere, Coulson didn't really die. Or he was resurrected. Or something. This is comic book logic, people. Anything can happen. The important thing is...
COULSON LIVES!
Can’t stop the signal: Marvel's "The Avengers"––directed by Joss Whedon and starring everyone––was released in the U.S. on May 4, 2012. It broke box office records left and right and launched Whedon from Geek God cult icon to veritable Hollywood phenomenon.
