On January 25, 2013, former "X Factor" U.K. contestant Rylan Clark was named the winner of Channel 5's "Celebrity Big Brother" U.K. Season 11, with married couple Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag coming in second place. Clark is the first "X Factor" alum to be a "Celebrity Big Brother" winner.
Clark came in fifth place on "The X Factor" U.K. in 2012. He entered the "Celebrity Big Brother" Season 11 house on January 3, 2013. The other contestants were Pratt, Montag, Sam Robertson, Tricia Penrose, Gillian Taylforth, Ryan Moloney, Frankie Dettori, Claire Richards, Lacey Banghard, Paula Hamilton and Neil Ruddock.
"Celebrity Big Brother" features famous contestants who live together in a house that is under constant video surveillance, with the contestants required to complete tasks and challenges. The public votes for the winner. Season 11 of the show was filmed at Elstree Studios in Borehamwood, England.
Clark was a controversial contestant on "The X Factor" U.K. because people either loved or hated his over-the-top antics and flamboyant personality. His critics disliked that Clark, who almost always sang off-key, had advanced farther in the competition than more talented singers.
Clark also had his share of controversy on "Celebrity Big Brother." He feuded with Pratt and Montag. And, as previously reported, a "Celebrity Big Brother" spokesperson confirmed that the show gave Clark special treatment by allowing him time away from the show to rehearse for "The X Factor" U.K. 2013 tour, which launches on January 26 in Manchester, England. Clark is one of seven "X Factor" U.K. alumni acts from 2012 who are on the tour.
The "Celebrity Big Brother" contestants aren't supposed to leave the house until they are evicted or declared the winner, so when news leaked out that Clark was leaving the house to rehearse for the tour, it caused a major uproar among "Celebrity Big Brother" viewers. However, Clark has his share of fans, including several "X Factor" U.K. alumni, who said they want him to win "Celebrity Big Brother."
The "Celebrity Big Brother" spokesperson admitted: "Rylan has rehearsed for his tour on site with a choreographer, escorted by a 'Big Brother' producer."
When "Celebrity Big Brother" host (and "Celebrity Big Brother" Season 2 winner) Brian Dowling asked Clark how it felt to win, Clark replied: "Do you know what? Coming from you ... it's a dream come true. They hated me three months ago, and I've no idea what's going on! I remember when Brian was in the house ... I screamed for him. My housemates are people I grew up with and I can't believe it."
Clark isn't the only "X Factor" alum to have competed on "Celebrity Big Brother." In 2011, Jedward was on the show and came in third place. And in 2012, Frankie Cocozza came in second place on "Celebrity Big Brother." On "The X Factor" U.K., Jedward came in sixth place in 2009, while Cocozza came in seventh place in 2011 before he was disqualified because of a drug-related rule violation. (He admitted to doing cocaine while he was an "X Factor" contestant.)
