Ryan Seacrest is one of the hardest working men in all of show business. However, he didn't get to where he is today by accident. Regardless of your profession, Seacrest's career path is certainly one that most people from the San Francisco Bay Area to Seacrest's own Atlanta, Georgia, would be wise to attempt to emulate. The American Idol MC isn't forcing career advice on us but here are 5 practical Seacrest guidelines for all:
1) Always be prepared.
Seacrest's first big break came when he was still in high school. He was interning at the local radio station, when the regular DJ fell ill. Seacrest had already learned enough to fill in. The station's owner heard his debut and hired him on the spot. You never know when an opportunity will land in your lap. Do what you can to be ready to catch it.
2) Don't worry about money.
When Ryan Seacrest got his first afternoon radio show at the age of 20, he was offered only $15 per hour. Some people might have been offended at the low offer, but Seacrest merely worked harder and by the time he had turned his show into a nationally syndicated juggernaut, the money came rolling in. Eventually, hard work shines through and will result in financial gain.
3) Treat every job with respect.
Do you remember Brian Dunkleman? He was Seacrest's co-host on the first season of "American Idol." However, while Seacrest was enthusiastic and had tons of energy that first year, Dunkleman looked and acted like he didn't want to be there. Ten years later, Seacrest is still hosting the hit show while Dunkleman was canned after the first season and lives in obscurity.
4) Never stop looking for the next big thing.
Although Seacrest is entrenched on "American Idol" and his radio show, he hasn't stopped trying out new tasks for size, just in case he suddenly finds himself unexpectedly sent to unemployment line. He filled in for Larry King on his talk show and Dick Clark on the New Year's Eve broadcast form Times Square. Network executives have been so impressed by his skill that he has been talked about as a permanent replacement candidate for Matt Lauer on the "Today Show." Because he hasn't rested on his laurels, Seacrest may well be on the air forever!
5) Remember where you came from.
Despite all the success, Seacrest has always remembered his humble beginnings and is always willing to give unknowns a chance, be it up-and-coming bands on his radio show, or making huge financial donations to charities that help children all over the world. He also has a sense of humor about all his media exposure, and that has earned him the respect of his peers rather than their scorn.
