Mount Hood Village rated No. 5
The number 5 spot went to Mount Hood Village, located on U.S. Highway 26 in Welches, just 40 miles east of Portland. Mt. Hood Village is located on 114 acres of lush forest with access to the Salmon River.
Mount Hood is an active volcano, part of the chain of volcanoes strewed thoughout the cascade mountains. In 1859 and 1865 Mount Hood erupted; however, not to the extent of Mt. St. Helans in Washington that created a devastating blow in 1980.
There are 352 camping sites—277 with full 30/50-amp electric service, water, and sewer.
Golf, tennis, hiking, mountain biking, fly fishing, year round skiing, and snowmobiling all just minutes away!
Mount Hood Village is also home to the Mount Hood Huckleberry Festival & Barlow Trail Days (2010 dates: August 27-29) and Mount Hood Salmon & Mushroom Festival (2010 dates: October 2-3)
Additional amenities include a heated indoor swimming pool and spa, fitness center, the Village Store, sports courts and banquet facilities.
Viento State Park rated No. 6
The number 6 spot went to Viento State Park (pronounced ‘vee-EN-toe’), located six miles west of Hood River in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area. Where a railroad station once stood is now the home of one of the Gorge's best kept secrets: Viento is a great place to camp! With modern campsites, Viento almost always has a spot available when other campgrounds in the area are full. No reservations are accepted; camping is first-come, first-served.
The Columbia River Gorge is a spectacular river canyon cutting the only sea-level route through the Cascade Mountain Range. It's 80 miles long and up to 4,000 feet deep with the north canyon walls in Washington State and the south canyon walls in Oregon State.
Joseph H. Stewart State Recreation Area rated No. 7
The number 7 spot went to Joseph H. Stewart State Recreation Area, located on Oregon Highway 62, 35 miles northeast of Medford, southern Oregon’s largest city, and 36 miles southwest of Crater Lake National Park.
Amenities include 151 electric sites with water (141 reservable) and 50 tent sites with water (47 reservable), RV dump station, flush toilets and showers. Overlooking the Rogue River’s scenic Lost Creek Reservoir, Joseph Stewart is a popular camping destination for hikers and bikers as well as for anglers and boaters.

Two physical facts shaped my boyhood in Oregon more than school, church, or parents: the volcanoes of the Cascade Range to the east, and the coast to the west.
No matter how tedious life at times could become, one look out the window was enough to remind me that, not far away, the World—and adventure—were impatiently waiting.
