I took my friend Carla to Ruth's Chris Steakhouse for her birthday. Though looking forward to it, we had both heard the same stories about outrageous prices. Arriving at 7 on a Saturday night, the restaurant was busy - despite a reservation, our party had to wait, along with many others in the foyer. One small complaint - they brought out complimentary wine for one of the large parties that was waiting to enjoy while they waited. One would think that with more than one party waiting, if one party was offered wine, all parties would be offered wine. This was not the case, and the birthday girl went thirsty.
A word about the decor - it is lovely, very suitable for a special occasion. When the menu arrived it was nice to see that all the talk of exorbitant prices was just that - talk. While Ruth's Chris is certainly not cheap - it's prices were right in line with a steakhouse of this calibre in the
It also has a prix fixe menu–which may be new due to the recession–which was very reasonable and offered a small salad, choice of 2 sides and an entree for between $30-50. We split the crab cakes appetizer, which was quite good. The birthday girl had the prix-fixe option with the steakhouse salad, tenderloin & scallops entree and the mushrooms and tomato sides. I had the prix-fixe option with the caesar salad, tenderloin and BBQ shrimp and green beans and mashed potato sides. Both meals were enjoyed thoroughly, and we were too full for birthday dessert.
Overall, the tenderloins was cooked perfectly to spec, (as Carla prefers her meat on the done side, and claims I "like it so rare that a good vet could resuscitate it"), the service was attentive but not pushy and the ambience was wonderful.
It would be hard to peg this the best beef ever, but it was right up there with it. Carla declared it her new favorite restaurant. After enjoying an appetizer, 2 prix-fixe options, and 2 glasses of wine each, the bill came to an amount very reasonable for a restaurant of this calibre. Not an everyday place, or somewhere to take the kids, but good for impressing clients, a celebration, or a date night.
