The Scarlet Knights upset #24 Pittsburgh at the RAC this afternoon by a score of 67-62. It was the first win for Head Coach Mike Rice since returning from a three-game suspension by the University. Rutgers improves to 10-3 on the season and 1-1 in the Big East. The Panthers fell to 12-3 and 0-2 in the conference.
Rutgers played a great first half and led by 16 points late in the half. They survived a late run by Pittsburgh in the second half which was largely due to their inability to control the ball. The team finished with 17 turnovers with the majority of them in the second half.
Eli Carter came off the bench to score a game-high 23 points. Myles Mack was the only other Scarlet Knight in double digits with 11 points. Dane Miller led the team in rebounds with six. They played great defense as they held the Panthers to 37.5% shooting overall and held them to 25 points in the first half.
This was a true character test for the team after they were blown out by Syracuse on the road Wednesday night. Rice was returning from suspension and the team lost by 25 points and only scored 20 points in the first half. This win shows the team still supports Rice and maybe they do have what it takes to make a run to the postseason this year.
The team will next take on St. John’s at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night.
