Rutgers looking for new athletic director

WBTV has reported that Rutgers University is now looking for a new athletic director. Tim Pernetti turned in his resignation Friday morning over an incident with head basketball coach Mike Rice, who was caught on video physically and verbally abusing members of the men’s basketball team.

The University held a press conference Friday morning where President Robert Barchi stated the resignation was a ‘mutual decision.’

"I appreciate the positive things that Tim has done for the university, but I also recognize the gravity of recent developments in regards to the men's basketball program," Barchi said.

The men’s team received an apology from Barchi. He also commented on the gay remarks made by Rice.

"I also apologize to the LGBTQ community, and all of us who share their values, for the homophobic slurs displayed on that video. I personally know how hurtful that language can be," Barchi said.

The video in question was made public on Tuesday sparking Rice’s termination. Pernetti had it since November. Rice was not fired at that time, only suspended for three games and given a fine of $75,000, as well as mandatory anger-management therapy.

"In connection with the incidents involving former basketball Coach Mike Rice, as was the case with all other matters which I handled on behalf of the University, I always tried my best to do what is right," Pernetti said in his letter of resignation.

Jimmy Martelli, assistant basketball coach, also resigned on Thursday. He was also involved in the abuse of the players.
