Today, as a meteor unleashed a force of energy 20 times more powerful than the Hiroshima bomb into earths atmosphere over Chelyabinsk, Russia, athletes were training at a city sports arena as the huge windows became flying missiles. Athletes were shocked as flying “shards of glass” came raining down on them, according to the Herold Sun. They were cut and still bleeding as Russian television ran video of the live tragedy.
Approximately 100,000 square meters of glass shattered in the city of Chelyabinsk, making these athletes part of a large group of people who were injured because of the flying glass. Approximately 3,000 buildings lost their windows, injuring around 1,100 people. Nearly 50 people were seriously injured.
With athletics being such a vital part of Russia's economy and heritage, the grief this brings to Russia is great. Our hearts and prayers go out to these who have been injured and we pray for their speedy recovery.
