Russia has clinched the overall medals title in the Sochi Olympics, reported ESPN on Feb. 23, 2014. Russia finished with 13 golds and 33 total medals. The U.S. won nine gold medals and 28 medals total in Sochi.

On Sunday the Olympics came to a close with host nation Russia on top of total number of medals won, reports IBN Live News. Russia had an impressive lead with 13 golds to Norway's 11. Alexander Legkov soared to victory in the 50 km race in a Russian medals sweep on the cross-country skiing track, which ensured Russia as the most successful nation at the Sochi Olympic Games.

Russia has now emulated the Canadians who topped the Olympic medal rankings on home turf four years earlier. Legkov told a news conference, "People kept asking me whether I believed Russia could do as well as Canada did in Vancouver ...and I didn't believe it." Legkov also commented, "Now this is our pride, it's wonderful." This has turned out to be a great year for Russia at Sochi as people worldwide watched this spectacular event.
