Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013, the round-up of news links of Syria via the Drudge Report revealed that a prominent military official of Russia, had tweeted, "The West behaves towards the Islamic world like a monkey with a grenade." Russia’s former envoy to NATO and current overseer of Russia's military complex, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin, made the tweet on his Russian Twitter site.
The same statement made by any political figure in America would immediately be interpreted as a racist slur directly aimed at President Obama. Arguably, the insinuation was deliberately provocative, laced with open contempt. However, it was reported that Rogozin "did not elaborate on his comparison."
Seething hostility between the two countries has been palpable since Russia made the decision to grant asylum to Edward Snowden. Shortly thereafter, Obama “postponed” a long-standing date with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Adding insult to injury, the president then explained away tensions with Russia on an NBC late night show, saying he had no tolerance for Russia's Olympic boycott or anti-gay laws. Tit for tat, the two countries are having at one another.
In the meantime, these barbed exchanges are going on against the backdrop of war drums. According to NBC, the United States appears to be gearing up to launch missile strikes against Syrian President Bashar Assad, within days.
