Russia: First Borey class ballistic missile sub commissioned

Russia announced that its first Borey class ballistic missile nuclear submarine was officially commissioned into service. The new submarine, named the Yury Dolgoruky, was commissioned in northern Russia at the Sevmash shipyard in Severodvinsk.

Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu attended the ceremony.

The new Borey class submarine will replace several maturing submarines including the Typhoon or Akula class submarine. The new submarine and those that follow are believed to be capable of carry 16 Bulava ballistic missiles.

The new Borey class submarine is expected to make up the backbone of Russia’s strategic submarine fleet in the years ahead.
