Russell Johnson, 'The Professor' from Gilligan's Island dies at 89

"The Professor and Mary Ann, here on Gilligan's Island." This line from the hit TV show remains solid in the minds of many people who grew up in the 1960's. Russell Johnson, who played "The Professor" died Thursday, January 16 at the age of 89. The reported cause of death was kidney failure.

Johnson had many other film and TV credits. He played a role on the western series "Black Saddle." A local fan remembered that Johnson starred in episodes of "Twilight Zone."

His official name on "Gilligan's Island" was Professor Roy Hinkley, but he was mostly called "The Professor." The show played from 1964-1967 and reruns of the show are still aired.

Johnson was born in Ashley, Pennsylvania and died in Bainbridge Island, Washington.
