The Professor, as he would later be known for his work on "Gilligan's Island", Russell Johnson's movie list goes back to the early 1950's, when he starred in many westerns and sci fi films.
Russell Johnson was born in Pennsylvania, and would spend most of his childhood at a boarding school with his brothers. He was not a great student but would hold his own. He would enlist in the Army Air Corps during WWII and would receive the Purple Heart when his B-24 Liberator was shot down in the Philippines.
It would be in a sit-com called "Gilligan's Island" that Johnson would be immortalized. He would play Professor Roy Hinkley in the comedy series but would never be able to get away from the stereotype. At first like most he would resent being typecast but in the end he would come to grips with it and realize it was his bread and butter and was paying the bills.
Johnson would live a long and interesting life and died at the age of 89. Forever in some of our minds he will always be the charming, lovable Professor on that little Island they never were able to escape. It was only supposed to be a three hour tour. Rest In Peace Professor.
