Once the "Obamacare" website began having technical issues, the right-wing media was quick to jump on the attack and some have brought new conspiracies to the table.
President Obama has made it clear that he is more than annoyed with the issues that the Affordable Care Act website has been dealing with, but said the problems will be fixed as soon as possible. Despite the technical problems, reports have shown that health insurance premiums in many states have dropped and many have signed up through the exchange in ways other than the website option.
The website, healthcare.org, is still having issues three weeks after the roll-out started, but one right-wing talker thinks there is more to the story. During his radio show broadcast this week, Rush Limbaugh noted that the company that was hired to create the website once attempted a gun registry in Canada. Limbaugh, tapping in to the gun paranoia of the right-wing voting base, accused the Obama administration of possibly building a "stealth" gun registry in the United States.
"Do you know this company, this IT company that they hired, this is from Joel Pollak at Breitbart: "Obamacare Tech Firm Tried, Failed to Build Gun Registry in Canada." You think this might be why they got hired? "CGI, the Canadian company whose U.S. subsidiary built the failed Obamacare website, was once contracted to build a federal gun registry for the Canadian government, Breitbart News has learned.....
For crying out loud, not only did they waste a bunch of money, they hired a firm which had a track record of failure. This is exactly what happens. As long as you are trying to do something to advance and further the agenda and you're right in line with the cause, doesn't matter how much you fail, you're gonna get promoted. So here's a group, tried to put together a gun registry in Canada. Oh, yeah, we love those kinds of people. Oh, yeah. Gun registry, that's the kind of people we need. And while we're working on health care they can in a stealth way be establishing one of those here maybe. Just ruminating here."
For the last five years, Republicans and conservatives across the country have been drilling the idea into the minds of many Americans that President Obama and his administration were going to confiscate all of the guns in the country. The paranoid talking points have led to record gun sales in all 50 states. The reality is that President Obama couldn't even get a background check law passed through his own Democratic controlled Senate and even if he wanted to, couldn't come close to taking away the guns of the American people. The narrative of President Obama "taking all of your guns" is pushed by the NRA and the right-wing media in an attempt to drum up fear and gun sales for the manufactures.
The Affordable Care Act is a step in the right direction and the issues the website are having will be fixed sooner rather than later. To attempt to tie in gun paranoia with the health care law just distracts attention away from the real issue of health care and making it more affordable to millions of Americans.
