One of the judges commented how “RuPaul’s Drag Race” is still going strong into its fifth season. Monday night on the LOGO network saw the season premiere with 14 contestants or drag queens. The grand prize is $100,000 for the deserving winner. In the last two seasons there was Alexis Mateo from St. Pete in season three, the short-lived Alisa Summers from Tampa in season four was the first to be eliminated. Now in season five there are three from Florida: Gainesville, Tallahassee, and Orlando. Tampa Bay subscribers to Bright House Networks saw it on channel 147.
All of the contestants must be biological males, but you wouldn’t know it from their amazing transformations. The show continued with its standard mini and main challenges. RuPaul acts as host and mentor in the first half, while in drag during the latter portion he’s head judge. For the main challenge they went to Beverly Hills of all things...dumpster diving.
Much of the show takes place in the work/dressing room where you see them sans makeup and wigs. One thing is apparent this season, the soon-to-be heated feud between two drag queens, Alyssa Edwards and Coco Montrese. They’re have competed in pageants, were very good friends, but not anymore. Stay tuned for the whole story to reveal itself.
Obviously the world of drag is indeed a small world, because last season’s winner Sharon Needles has her significant other on as a contestant. Alaska, not to be confused with the 49th state, is an interesting one to watch out for. It might be an acquired taste though. During the runway judging Alaska’s dumpster couture was creative and spectacular. In the end it was Roxxxy Andrews from Orlando who stunned the judges with a tastefully revealing gown from garbage. Penny Tration, who was voted on as the fan favorite to join the cast, would be the first to sashay away.
