Alexander Wang has been the cool kid on the fashion block since he debuted his first runway collection in 2007. He’s known for his grunge-y, street-style-inspired aesthetic, stating that real style comes out when someone is dressed casually. As he put it, anyone can look great when they get dressed up, but on the streets is when style really shines through. It’s really no surprise that Wang found so much inspiration in the 90’s, and he translated the era perfectly into a modern collection perfect for his usual customer.
Alexander Wang created his own version of 90’s logo-mania by sending dresses with his name laser-cut into them down the runway. There’s no mistaking who made these garments, making the question “who are you wearing?” completely unnecessary. The most popular looks from his Spring/Summer 2014 collection seem to be his “Parental Advisory” tops. Way back in the 90’s, CD’s included “Parental Advisory” stickers on the front when the album contained explicit content, the intention being to deter young kids from buying them without parental consent. Taking this phrase and splashing it across a sweatshirt is an homage to the rebellious feeling of teens in the 90’s, hardcore rock, youth…everything edgy and cool. Wang is, after all, the purveyor of cool.
