Running with (and beating) the big boys

It is very exciting to see Danica Patrick take the pole position for the Daytona 500 set to run next Sunday. There has never been a female driver start from the pole for this event. There has actually never been a female start from the pole in any NASCAR Sprint Cup race.

Many have had their doubts about Danica's ability to transition from running Indy cars to running in NASCAR. She has shown herself to be up to the challenge and she appears to be poised to make her mark in the sport. Her popularity with the fans was immediate. She not only gives the female fans a kindred spirit to support, the male fans have taken notice of her her as well.

Danica could easily be seen as "just a pretty face." She is without question very attractive with an outgoing personality. She struts down pit road in her bright green GoDaddy.com firesuit. She was named the most popular driver in the 2012 Nationwide Series. She has a great deal going for her.

Even though this is the first race of the season and there are many questions yet to be answered; she has shown herself to be fearless and willing to mix it up with the greatest drivers in motorsports. If today is an indication, there may be a new driver to consider as a Chase Contender.

I will admit that I had some reservations about the announcement of her relationship with fellow driver, Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. This is a new situation, there has never been a time when two drivers had a personal relationship. With Danica Patrick showing her skill on the track, there is no question that she is in it to win it.
