Running while pregnant - the third trimester

If you are still running when you hit the third trimester, this is a big accomplishment!  While it may not even feel like running anymore, you are still out there moving and doing your best to keep fit. The first trimester was not too bad, except for possible morning sickness and overall tiredness. The second trimester seemed like a breeze, at least in the beginning. Now, the third trimester -  the home stretch!

Your changing shape and needs will place different stresses on your body. Be sure to listen to your body when running while pregnant and do not try to push yourself too hard.

What are some things to expect in the third trimester? Your pace will most likely be 2-5 minutes slower than your pre-pregnancy pace. You may be taking walk breaks, and you will definitely be taking bathroom breaks. At this point, you will want to find a place to run that is near a bathroom, or run indoors at a gym or at home if you own a treadmill. There is a good deal of pressure put on your bladder by this time, paired with drinking water, which will make for many bathroom visits!  Your back may hurt, you may have side stitches or sore parts of your body.  If the pressure is too much, take a break and try again later.  You could also do some walking and see if the pressure subsides.  Remember, running is really day to day at this point and you should listen to your body - if you are not comfortable, stop running.  Try again another day or another time of day.  For added comfort, you can try wearing a maternity belt.

A few things to consider when running while pregnant:

  • Be sure to adequately hydrate and fuel before, after and during your runs.
  • Take it easy on yourself and listen to your body.
  • View every run as an accomplishment.  If you have to stop running, remember it is for a good cause and in no time you will be running again. Stay positive!
