Running the Houston Half Marathon: an interview with The Woodlands' Sheri Stockstill

Want to know what it takes to run 13.1 miles? First time half marathoner and Woodlands Resident, Sheri Stockhill will be running in Houston’s Aramco Half Marathon on Sunday, January 17. Here’s a Q&A with Sheri:

Q. What is your past running experience?

A.  I used to run track in high school, and forgot how rewarding it was. I have two boys Colby, he just turned 6, and Jayden, he is 18 months. About a year ago, I decided it was time to rediscover my self, so I joined a boot camp group in The Woodlands, Legions Fitness and Development.   From that point on, I've been running with my group and have fell in love with running, again! My accomplishments are so empowering. I ran my first 5k Thanksgiving morning; wow, that was incredible! My goal for starting the boot camp, and running has been to balance my mind, body and soul! It is an on going process that has truly transformed my life!!! I'm enjoying the journey - that is so rewarding in and of its self.

Q. Are you running for a cause/person?

A. Yes, I've dedicated this half marathon to my father, Terry Lee Aucion Sr. who is in heaven with our Lord, and my mother, Carmelita Chesser, who is battling health issues. Through out all of my training I use my time to reflect on both parents, in prayers and memories.

Q. Are you training on your own or with a group?

A. I train by myself and with my very faithful and encouraging group, Legions Fitness and Development.

Q. When did you start training for the half marathon?

A. March 2008

Q. How many days a week are you running?

A. 2 or 3

Q. How did you increase your mileage?

A. First week, by 1 mile then I've slowly increased the miles as I've increased my endurance.

Q. Are you following a specific diet or not?

A. Yes, for the most part a healthy diet, not too extreme.

Q. Are you doing anything in particular the week before the run to prepare?

A. Yes, I’m winding down training, drinking lots of water and focusing on rest!!!!!

Q. What keeps you motivated?

A. My energy level is amazing!!!!!!! Up at 4:30 and productive all day. My body transformation is really motivating. I feel like I'm myself again, not just a wife and mom, but the best Sheri I can be!!!!!!!

Q. What has this process taught you?

A. To balance my mind, body and soul.

Q. Would you do it again?

A. YES, I'm planning to run the full marathon next year!

Sheri is a 38 year old Interior Designer/business owner (Unlimited Designs & R&L Remodeling Inc.), married to Roger with two healthy, beautiful boys.

I really admire anyone who can run more than three miles; with my lung capacity, it's hard enough to run one mile. ;-)
