Watching local endurance races are always fun. We are used to seeing sprinters take off like a shot and race to the finish, but to watch a group do the same thing at an endurance run is somewhat humorous in thought. To run with them is interesting; to see them start falling back after the first 100 yards makes one wander what they thought they were training for. The fact that good runners are not necessarily fast runners is a lesson to be learned.
Salt Lake City's Kim Cowart, a ksl.com Contributor discussed some running myths in her KSL write up on 6 Running Myths. After she makes fun of several societal myths, she discusses some myths about the sport of running. Her first two ironies are about the speed of the runner. Now granted, if a person wants a placement they do have to run faster than the rest of the pack. Not everyone is going after titles though, in fact 98.5% of the race is ran by runners not sprinters.
You don’t have to run fast to run, but you do have to keep running if you want to run.
